[whatsuppaws] Reno-Miracle Dog

Dear friends,
Bear with us as we share this photo of Reno with you. This was taken last October 3. He was rescued in Cubao by PAWS volunteers Daisy Medel and Joe Claret. Reno was found huddled by the side of the street with a bloodied face. He had tumors on his face and his body also bore marks of neglect and abuse.
Under the caring hands of Dr David Arceo, the dog whom we did not think would survive, had shown dramatic improvement. (see photos dated October 20 below)

We call Reno our “Miracle Dog” because, unlike Romeo/Juliet, we did not send out an alert since the prognosis was not very good. Rescuers were advised to pray and hope for the best.

Last week, Dr Arceo texted us with this message: “This dog continues to surprise. The other eye which I thought was completely blind and hopeless, is now a feasible, seeing eye! He is now on his second round of chemotherapy..”

Dogs with special medical needs like Reno are not included in the PAWS Shelter’s monthly budget /overhead cost of P80,000 (about $1,800).

[whatsuppaws] Top Six Needs of the Shelter

Dear animal advocate,
Submitted a volunteer application form to PAWS but have not yet been Oriented?  Anyone can drop by the shelter and help!
The only difference between “oriented” and ”non-oriented” volunteers is that the latter may not be allowed to do direct animal care and must be supervised at all times by a senior volunteer. New volunteer hours are from 4pm to 6pm.
Our policy is not “A job for every volunteer but a volunteer for every job.” so we require that volunteers take a look at the list of tasks posted outside our office starting tomorrow and take on a task that they feel they are good or most effective at.
Anyone (not just volunteers) can also launch a  “cat food drive”, “towel drive” or any collection drive for any of the following  urgent needs of the PAWS animal shelter:
Here are the top six needs of the shelter at the moment –
1. Dry cat food
Consumption: One 30kg bag lasts the shelter kitties - 5 days
2. Vibravet
Consumption: Currently, five (5) pieces a month. For kittens under treatment
3. Bleach
Consumption: Biggest bottle of ZONROX lasts 1 week.
4. Canex or any all-wormer
Consumption: Good for forty (40)  average (native) sized  dogs once every three months.
5. Detergent Powder - I kilo
Consumption: Ten (10) kilos a month
6. Old towels and newspapers

Stop dog gassing and drowning in the future for Cagayan de Oro City

News reports confirm the cruel dog gassing and drowning conducted by
the Cagayan de Oro City Veterinary Office to get rid of dogs in
pounds.

The dogs impounded in the streets and remained unclaimed in pounds
are subjected to a slow and painful death. The drowning was done in a
landfill in full view of the public; it took about five long minutes
before one dog dies. The remains of the dogs are dumped in the same
landfill.

This is an outright violation of Republic 8485 or Philippine Animal
Welfare Act of 1998 which clearly states that killing of dogs must be
done humanely at all times.

The veterinary office of Cagayan de Oro City has been experimenting
on carbon monoxide poisoning using vehicle exhaust and improvised gas
chambers, drowning, and intracranial injection to rid of strays since
1996. The law was passed and took effect in 1998.

We have to let the officials know that we will not let this pass and
this barbaric act should never happen again. I have written a letter
to guide you write your own letter or you can use the one I wrote.
Unfortunately, CDO officials don’t have email addresses so we have to
make extra effort to send a snail mail. I hope that you will find
time to do this so there will be no more dogs who will suffer such
cruelty in the future.

Dear Dr. Asis/Mayor Constantino,

I am writing to express my concern about the method used in
controlling the population of strays and preventing the spread of
rabies in your city.

The dogs didn’t have to experience a slow, painful, and disturbing
death through gassing, drowning or intracranial injection. They were
separated from their guardians, impounded, and kept in dog pounds.
And they don’t deserve to be dumped in a landfill after they die.

These animals have feelings like all of us. They feel fear and
anxiety. They don’t deserve to be subjected to seeing their fellow
dogs die in front of their eyes. This is not only inhumane but
barbaric.

I understand that there are other more humane ways in controlling the
population of strays as mandated by the Philippine law. Death by
lethal injection is the most humane way of animal population control
as proved by other cities in the Philippines like Marikina in Metro
Manila.

I hope that you will follow the examples of other cities in your
country and work with animal welfare groups to help you and save the
image of your city which has been tainted by this piece of horrifying
news.
