Foodish heart

obviously there’s not much work today

from Abby :D — the topic is food, how can I not answer hee

Ano ang iyong almusal kanina?
Coffee

Ikaw ay may itlog — nilagang itlog. Paano mo ito kakainin?
O god I just saw a wonderful recipe I plan to try out.  I am actually thinking of buying an egg poacher like the article mentioned.

Ano ang paborito mong local na junkfood?
Now extinct: Carol Ann’s Potato Strings, tapos Munchees

Bawal magsinungaling)
Pwede ba akong kumain nalang and hindi magluto…
Appetizer: Bitter Greens salad and/or the poached egg I mentioned earlier
Soup: Thin veggie or bean soup
Main course: Porkloin stuffed with Morels, with sage pasta on the side
Dessert:  Blue cheese and honeycomb, camembert-ish cheese and figs

hmmm…I think I would walk to the next block and get some frites, a salad, maybe some steak or lamb, a ginger lemonade and (hopefully its on the menu now) a honey/salt panna cotta at Universal Cafe.

I’m guessing: Boil some beef shank and ribs in water. Set aside when soft. Saute garlic, onion, tomatoes, add salt and pepper, then beef, then broth. Add instant sinigang mix (!) then gabi, eggplant, kangkong.

Mashed potato and gravy a la KFC, tapos macaroni salad or coleslaw.

This is a bit late but if you haven’t done your version yet, please do

Dear smelly person beside me on the bus

Save the environment, take a bath.

Some bikers!

You know how biking comes off as a really good thing to do?  Bikers -  man, do they defend their bike lanes, and other biker rights, and swing the environmental flag like they make so much difference.

Well, being a pedestrian-commuter is good too you know.  And I really don’t like it when some (quite a lot actually) bikers — after getting their bike lanes and all - bike on the sidewalks in my pedestrian path, don’t follow stop signs, don’t slow down, and then freak out when they get honked at.

Car-drivers can be wild and testy but really from what I’ve seen its the bikers here — esp. in that bastion of “hipness” the Mission — where a lot of hipsters dress alike: skinny jeans, sneakers or checkered vans, old tshirts, tattoos (whats so hip about looking like every 3rd or 4th person eh?? )

Shit I lost my train of thought :P

Anyway, from what I have seen bikers are far more reckless than cars.  It’s almost as if they feel the road rules (signs and signals) don’t apply to them.  Some of them — Fucking urban terrorists, I tell you.

Picking a perfume

I’m not terribly fond of wearing perfume* but I think I can also blame the lack of (t0 me) attractive scents that I would want to wear.

So far I’ve only really liked two, both by Diptyque -

Philosykos

Philosykos

which smells ripe figgy, coconutty, torn leafyish. This is my all time favorite but J once told me I smelled like those sick people anointed by oil in church :S (must be the coconuts errr), andway I still love it.

And then there’s L’Ombre dans L’Eau

L’Ombre dans L’Eau

this is roses, and a lot of fresh torn dark green leaves, sort of sweet in an almost going to rot way (you know the rose pressed in a book smell?) but also bitter like your knees after you knelt on grass for a long time. It’s a pretty strong scent, but again, I really like it.

Recently I’ve also gotten a bottle of the Estee Lauder Azuree Soleil oil spray,

Estee Lauder Azuree Soleil

which is not technically a cologne or perfume, but I use it more for the smell than the oiliness so there you go. Ya ya ya, it was all the reviews going crazy over it that pushed me…sheep-like. It’s ookaay, very beach-y but a bit too sweet and powderish for me. Something I’ll use once in a while, just because I have a bottle, but not one I would use a lot or buy again.

Now I’m looking at this one called En Passant, which has that flowery/torn green leaves type of smell I like, and from reading I see this is made by the same person who developed my 2 favorites — Olivia Giacobetti. Interestinger and interestinger.

Shee too bad the closest shop I can try it is in LA … I wouder if I should just go and order it. :S

Salad yummies

Its not that I have been too busy to post, I’ve actually got 1-2-3-4-5-6 unfinished posts but for the life of me I just can’t follow through. Maybe it’s because for the last 2 weeks I’ve been trying to eat healthier (= less red meat and sweets, more fish and veggies and cereal) and since I’m not getting all my junk my body is in shock hehe.

At home I usually prepare the salads, which are based on recipes I get off the internet.

My favorites (links in the titles)

Bitter Greens Salad with Pancetta

  • 1 head frisee, torn into bite size pieces
  • 1/2 radicchio, sliced thinly
  • 1 to 1 1/2 cup arugula leaves
  • balsamic vinegar
  • olive oil
  • 1 shallot chopped into tiny pieces
  • salt and pepper
  • toasted walnuts
  • parmesan cheese
  • 4 slices pancetta, grilled or fried crunchy (use bacon as a substitute)

1. Prepare dressing: Mix vinegar and olive oil (I like a 2:3 ratio but you decide for yourself), chopped shallots, and add some salt and pepper.

2. Slice pancetta into cubes, grill or fry until crunchy

3. Toast walnuts if they arent toasted yet.

4. Mix frisee, radicchio, and arugula, toss in dressing. Add walnuts and pancetta, then add parmesan cheese. Mix but don’t be so rough. Top with more cheese. Serve.

Shaking Beef Salad like the one by Slanted Door

Meat

  • 2 T chopped garlic
  • 1 t brown sugar
  • 1½ t salt
  • ¾ t fresh black pepper
  • 2 T neutral cooking oil, such as canola or corn oil
  • 1½ lbs tri tip or tenderloin or filet mignon, cut into 1” cubes

Vinaigrette

Dipping Sauce

  • Juice of 1 lime
  • ½ t kosher salt
  • ¼ t fresh ground black pepper

Stir-Fry

  • 4 T neutral cooking oil, such as canola or corn oil
  • 3 stalks green onion, cut into 1” pieces
  • ½ small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 t unsalted butter

Greens

  • 1/2 or so butter lettuce, torn into bite size pieces
  • 2 bunches watercress, for garnish
  • some basil leaves

1. Prepare marinade by combining the first 5 ingredients in a large nonmetal bowl. Add beef, combine and marinate, covered, in the refrigerator for two hours.

2. Prepare vinaigrette by mixing ingredients. Set aside.

3. Heat a pan over high heat. Divide beef, green onions and red onions in half, as you will cook in two batches.

4. Add 2 T oil to the wok. When the oil starts to smoke, add first portion of the beef in an even layer. Let it sit until a forms a brown crust, about 2 minutes. With a spatula, flip the beef over to brown the other side, about 1 minute.

5. Add first portion of the green onions and red onions and cook for 1 more minute. Pour half of vinaigrette down the side of the wok, and then shake pan to release the beef and toss with the vinaigrette. Add 1 t butter and continue to shake pan until butter melts. Remove the meat and onions from the wok. Keep warm.

6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 with second portion of meat, green onions and red onions. Place the butter lettuce and watercress in the middle of the serving plate and spoon hot beef and onions on top. Garnish with basil leaves

7. Prepare dipping sauce by putting salt and pepper in small ramekin and squeezing lime juice over it. Serve alongside the beef.

  • some butter lettuce, torn into pieces
