Japantown Noodles

Tenzaru Inaniwa Udon

If you want quick and cheap, Mifune.

Yummier, spendier, Takara. (but get it in the weekend lunch special for less)

Yummiest, spendiest, Maki –  and they have the Inaniwa udon.  The tenzaru tempura batter is incredibly light and crisp.

The blob

* that little white speck in the middle of her face is her snaggle tooth :P

She’s not losing any weight so I think diet dry kibble just wont do anymore. I’m trying to gear up to start a raw diet, but am a bit daunted by the *effort*. It’s something I need to start in the next month or 2 so wish us luck. Sasabay din ako sa pag diyeta.

In 3s

I’ve been really lucky with shoes recently. I got 2 pairs of sneakers way discounted through an online sample sale.

Puma Mihara MY16

and

Puma Neil Barrett

which I particularly like because using a differently colored pair of socks gives the shoe a new look hehe.

I think J was a bit *engganyo* by my sneaker good buys because he decided to head down to Haight St. to get some sneakers as well. Villains was on sale, and guess what…

Puma Mihara MY18

last pair in my size, 70% off. Nyaha!

Pinoyfoodfest

I really wasn’t able to eat out much when I was in Manila so I left still craving the fat and grease that composes most of my diet there. So when some friends decided to organize a trip to San Bruno for pinoy food I was pretty psyched. I of course did my research on the restaurant’s website, the menu and what to order. Unfortunately since we woke up late by the time J and I got there our friends had already ordered. No worries, they got almost everything I wanted, except the pork binagoongan.
We had:

taken from the online menu:

  • Lumpianitas / Pork: ground and sauteed wrapped and fried
  • Bicol Express / Vegetable medley; sauteed in coconut cream and served spicy
  • Lengua Champignon / Beef Tongue; stewed with mushroom and cream sauce
  • Sizzling Bangus Sisig / Milkfish: served with onion and jalapeno pepper
  • Lechon Kawali / Pork side: deep fried and served with liver sauce or vinegar sauce
  • Kare-Kare / Ox tail: cooked in peanut sauce with mixed vegetables
  • Crispy Fried Chicken prepared in a special seasoning

and dessert was Buko con Seta (their version of Halo-halo served on fresh young coconut and topped with ice cream)

I don’t usually like Halo halo but the restaurant’s version was amazing! The coconut shell was filled with candied fruit and a cool young coconut gelatin that was just what we needed to kill all the grease. Shit I’d go there again just for the dessert.

When we started eating there was no conversation at the table, everyone was galit-galit like a true pataygutom.

Far from Nissins

The officemates have been organizing some weekend foodtrips lately. And this weekend N*rina and Tina decided it was time for some ramen. Santa Ramen in San Mateo is supposed to be one of the best ramen places in the bay area. And you have to get there early because (1) its a small space and (2) they close when they run out of soup or noodles, (and they do!)

So we were there on Saturday, at 10:50am. The place opens at 11:30 but we were already the 3rd in line when we got there.

We stood around a bit, some chitchat, some lait, some jokes. Finally the place opens and the waitress goes out and takes our orders, its lunch so all they have is ramen, and 1 side dish.

J and N*rina had shoyu chashu (soy sauce broth with roast pork). The rest of us had tonkatsu chashu (pork broth with roast pork), and we got a couple of the chicken karaage side dishes.

We get seated inside (its not big, 29 people at a time, MAX) and after a short wait, the goodies arrive.

Now, I’m no ramen connoisseur but this tasted really good (J who is more discerning about Japanese food says its delicious). Flavorful broth with bits of fat floating in it, nice firm, tasty noodles, and soft fatty juicy pork slices. It was slurp slurp slurp till we all had our fill.

I think next time I’ll get what J ordered — the shoyu chashu, because the broth is a bit saltier and it comes with some bamboo shoots, bitter greens, and mystery veggies in it.

Although we had to wake up early on a Saturday I think it was worth it, because if we came late we would probably be among these poor unfortunate souls waiting with growling stomachs.

You can check out Santa Ramen’s menu here.
