Rescue of Tiger the Noseless Puppy

Here’s an email I got from the PAWS egroup. It was written by one of my good friends who heads the adoption committee.

Last week, PAWS volunteer Marian B alerted our Animal Rescue Team that there was a dog in their street who was run over by a vehicle. The owner refused to bring her dog to the vet and told Marian “gagaling din yan.”

On Thursday, PARC shelter staff were able to get to the dog, which turned out to be a 4-month old puppy. He was playful and frisky but his whole upper snout (including his nose) was severed. Neighbors reported that a baranggay patrol tricycle accidentally ran over him on May 4th (meaning the puppy had been this way for 2 weeks already when we got to him). There was also talk that since his upper snout was hanging loose, they got the neighborhood drunkard to cut it off, believing it was better for the puppy.

Our shelter manager was able to convince the owner to release the dog to our custody, and we brought him to the vet for confinement. Currently he is being checked by a team of doctors led by surgeon Dr. Nielsen Donato. We are still awaiting their diagnosis.

The puppy’s name is Tiger, he is amazingly playful, friendly, and frisky despite his condition. For him to survive that way for 2 weeks without help or medication shows that this pup is a fighter. The vet clinic advised us that he has a good appetite (despite the fact that he can only lick his food – he’s on a soft diet), and that they had placed him on antibiotics and vitamins.

Attached are some pics of Tiger taken during his rescue. (Sorry I haven’t opened this I feel I’ll get too upset :( )

Thanks to Marian B for caring enough to report this dog to us, and to help us all the way. Her parents were also very instrumental in helping us convince the owner to release the dog to PAWS custody.

Many many many thanks to Tita Josie, owner of Bodhi Vegetarian Restaurant and long-time PAWS donor and friend, for lending us the “rescue vehicle” and her driver, and for helping us find a vet for Tiger. I am personally very much overwhelmed at this woman’s generosity in helping animals (finding this out now, am I glad I’ve been a Bodhi customer all these years J)

We will update you on Tiger as soon as we get word from Dr. Donato.

Thanks,

PAWS

Guys, allow me to be a bit preachy and beggish. Please consider having your pets spayed and keeping them indoors or inside your gate and away from harm.

And if you want to you can volunteer at the shelter, or donate some items (they even need newspapers to serve as litter for their cattery) or even donate some money — please visit their website here. You can also visit the CARAPhil websiter here. And if you are thinking of getting a pet, please consider giving one of the animals a real home. It’s a lot of responsiblity but the rewards are unmeasurable.

Deflation

Got the shoes. Pretty no?

Unfortunately they are too small for me :(

I ordered a size bigger (last in that size again). And now I’m set for my 2 weeks of waiting na naman.

Woot!!

It’s been more than a week and I’m still waiting.

Ano ba sana tomorrow makuha ko na. Eto ang ayaw ko sa online shopping. I want INSTANT GRATIFICATION. Hay

Eavesdropper on the Bus 2

On the 27 bus one morning, a lady speaking on her cell.

“Hi. I want a divorce…. Yes, you heard it right…a DIVORCE…. Yeah yeah I love you I really do but I want a divorce”

Eavesdropper on the Bus 1

Middle-aged man speaking to his ponytailed male companion (also middle-aged) on the 27 bus (somewhere between Division and Market St)

“Oh thats the Department of Justice Building. I once jumped out of a cake there for a party. And man, did they grope me. EVERYBODY groped me.”

Artichoke Quickies

It must be artichoke season because they’re about a dollar a piece at the grocery now. I like boiling them with some salt and lemon juice in 3 inches of water for about 35-45minutes. I’m planning to try them with some quick dips I found on the internet.

HERBED MAYONNAISE
1 cup mayonnaise
1 teaspoon each chopped parsley and chives (or green onions, green part only)
¼ teaspoon chopped tarragon

Mix all ingredients well.

PESTO MAYONNAISE
1 cup mayonnaise
3 tablespoons or more pesto sauce (frozen is best for color)

Mix thoroughly. Adjust amounts to your taste.

CURRY MAYONNAISE
1 cup mayonnaise
2 teaspoons curry powder
2 teaspoons butter

Melt butter in a small pan. Add curry powder. Bubble gently for a minute or two over low heat to eliminate any bitterness from the curry powder. Cool and add to mayo.

SOY SAUCE MAYONNAISE
1 cup mayonnaise
¼ cup soy sauce (more or less to taste)
A dash of garlic powder

Mix thoroughly.

LOW CALORIE DILL DIP
1 cup plain yogurt
¼ cup reduced calorie mayonnaise
2 tablespoons minced green onion
3 teaspoons chopped capers
¾ teaspoon dried dill weed

Combine all ingredients well. (4 servings, 104 calories)

BUTTER
Many artichoke lovers prefer melted butter for their artichokes. The more creative among them add just about anything to the butter, particularly a touch of garlic powder, a few drops of lemon juice, minced dried dill, parsley, whatever turns you on. Delicious!

Joe’s Ice Cream

When I moved here I got terribly fixated on Ben&Jerry’s Peanut Butter Cup ice cream. I would dig dig dig through the pint to get those little cups of yum and would sometimes leave the ice cream looking like some large worms burrowed through it.

But since we moved apartments I am now lucky enough to live a few blocks away from Joe’s Ice Cream (Geary at 18th Avenue, the Richmond District). The place looks like those old-style ice cream parlors where girls in balloon skirts and ponytails would flirt with guys with tightpants and white shirts and slicked back hair hehe. And its not “interior-designed” ha. It’s the real thing - those stools look like they were made in the 50s.

The ice cream is made by the owner and served by his kids**, so you get that homey, non-big company vibe. The ice cream is yummy creamy and not too sweet, and they’ve got some interesting flavors so you get a bit confused and happy looking at the display. Plus: it’s only 3.60 for a pint of joy.

some I’ve tried:

* Black Walnut - delicious and rich and nutty
* Blueberry Cheese Cake
* Thai Tea - current favorite. Tastes just like the drink
* Coffee Crunch

some I plan to try:

* Ginger
* Peppermint Stick
* Pumpkin
* Toasted Almond
* Azuki Bean
* Lemon Chiffon
* Green Tea

Ay, they’ve also got chocolate dipped frozen bananas (remember the bananacle?) :D

** really nice polite guys and seeing them kinda assuages my fear of having wild, drugged, bored, bratty city kids who wear nothing but those fucking hiphop jeans (how do they stay on anyway)
