Back in SF / Anniversary

I almost missed my plane for SF because we passed by the office so I could say goodbye to the office cats….and my dad accidentally locked us out WITH MY HANDCARRY BAGGAGE LOCKED INSIDE!!!

You should have seen his face when he slammed the door and realized this heehee. I couldn’t get mad because I was half amused and half pitying him :P. We had to call a locksmith because I had to be at the airport at 9am and it was already that time — no time to drive all the way back to Marikina to get the spare key.

It took the locksmith forever, and even I was beginning to panic a bit. Damn we installed heavy duty locks when we moved into the new office and I never thought it was I that was going to get screwed. After a while the locksmith proposed to remove the entire lockset and I was thinking “you goddam dumbass, you should have given that option 1 hour ago”

I finally got to check in at 11am (for my 12:15 flight!!!) and thankfully was on the plane without anything more than a headache from the stress. The flight from Korea (stopover) to SF was a bit more annoying thanks to the lady next to me who had seemed to douse on an entire bottle of cheap strong perfume (I remember my mom once got a bottle of some horrible perfume called, of all things, Priscilla Presley, and this smelled exactly like the fucker beside me) Imagine 10 hours of that torture. Thankfully I fell asleep for most of the flight (passed out more like it hee).
Surprisingly, there was no queue at SF Immigration, so after a quick interview and inspection of my baggage (Do you have food in your baggage? Yes, lots of mangoes, chichacorn, sardines…..), I stepped out into the Arrivals Lounge and waited for J.

Ghirardelli Square

It’s good to be back with J. < Sappy attack> I’ll always love Manila, but home is where the husband is < / Sappy attack>

I can’t believe we’ve been married for 1 year already. Time’s really flown. Maybe it seems so short because we were not together for most of that 1 year… It’s been great though, not as terrifying to be together as I had thought. I thought there would be quite a lot of arguments and adjustments but we’ve been sailing pretty smoothly. Baka it is also because we’re not young kids anymore, so there’s not much drama and more easy conversation and pretty painless adjustment (for me at least…I think J is still in shock to have my underwear and other thingamajigs flooding the bathroom heehe)

J and I celebrated by having dinner at Gary Danko’s, which is supposedly one of SF’s better restaurants. J booked dinner about mid-December, and it may seem like such a long wait but I think it’s really worth the effort. Dinner was nice with a lot of handholding and smiling, but you’re not interested in that.

Here’s the lowdown on the food :P

Seared Foie Gras with Caramelized Red Onions, Roasted Grapes and Fuji Apples

Ayay, this came first and it almost made my eyes pop out. A large chunk of the yummiest fattiest meltiest foie gras on a bed of caramelized onions, with fruit on the side. Even those tiny green unidentifiable leaves were delicious. After tasting the dish I thought, “they can serve shit next, I don’t care. This makes the entire dinner worth it”

J ordered this. Delicious, the sauce was so mild and creamy, and who thought soybeans could be so delicious. I don’t usually like lobster but this was marvelous.

This was delicious. Not too sweet, very fluffy. The sauces were a vanilla cream sauce and a belgian chocolate sauce that the waiter dripped into the center.

Petit Fours

After dessert, the waiter brought over a small plate of petit fours and told us “Happy Anniversary”. Neat! I think Gary Danko’s is a great place for special celebrations (a great place to eat all the time if you’re rich or spendy). They even gave us some Pineapple Cake (”For breakfast tomorrow”) and packets of truffles when we were leaving. The place is packed, but the tables aren’t so close together so you don’t feel claustrophobic, or annoyed because you can hear the conversation from the next table. The waitpersons aren’t snooty either, so I loved that.

Sana we have our anniversary dinner at this place every year :D

Packing is harder then I thought, so I’ll end this here. More later.

How much

Guy says to Beauty at a bar “Would you sleep with me for a million bucks?” “Sure,” says beauty. “Would you sleep with me for $10?” “What do you think I am?” asks Beauty. Guy says “I think we established what you are, now we are negotiating price.”

Manila Girl

I’ve been back in Manila for 2 days and it’s been great to see my family, friends and pets :) Thankfully the weather is pleasant — somewhere in the high 20s (C) which is way way better than the mid 30s in summer.

Mom’s having her MRI and CTScan and we’re all hoping for good results. At this stage, we hope that her cancer has halted its progression and that she can go about her daily activities better (I think after getting cancer, the patient and the family really never go back to how it was before finding out…really, it is a totally new perspective on things.)

The rest of the family are pretty good, and my sister and I are planning a day for some fixup works (manicure, haircut, etc) because I want to get as much of that done while I am here. I’ll be in SF the rest of the year gnawing my ragged cuticles so I better give them some Manila-priced TLC hehe.

Not all the cats seem so enthusiastic to see me hee, but they’re starting to get affectionate again (as much as I would expect cats to get). Ita’s a really big boy now. He can’t fit into his favorite bed anymore (AND he hasn’t had a seizure since he’s been placed on maintenance phenobarbital — isn’t that GREAT!!!)

And Mother is a pig.

I still pop into the office to do some work (I am really not too pleased with our soon-to-be-not-our-accountant). They’ve done excellently since I left, and even won 3 jobs yay. I think we need to hire another person soon, but we’ll take it slow. I have learned that hiring is desperate times is not a good idea.

I really have the husband to thank for this trip as he got me a ticket when I couldn’t afford to pay for it. Really sweet :) I miss him.

I’ll get back the day before our 1st wedding anniversary. Gah time’s flown.

I love being married to J. I love that is not ALL hard work, and ALL mushy stuff, and ALL stress, and ALL laughing with friends, and ALL just loafing or doing nothing together, or ALL spending solitary time - but a mix of all that. Naka BINGO ako hahaha.

I’m bursting to announce that we have a new apartment to move to. It is BEAUTIFUL and I am so glad we got to rent it. It’s still at the Richmond but a bit further west.

I handed J the craigslist printout for a 1 bedroom apartment while we were having coffee at SFO waiting for my flight home. He called the name on the ad and was told that it would be shown to someone at 2PM that day and that he was welcome to attend the viewing. J had a meeting at 2pm so he asked if he could see it a bit earlier — 1:30 or 1:40 — and the lady agreed. Good thing too, because J told me that he saw the apartment and wrote the deposit cheque immediately. The person who arrived at 2PM had a cheque with her as well so if J had attended the 2PM viewing that apartment would have been snatched by her na.

Woot. The place is gorgeous — wood floors, lots of light, high ceilings, a bathtub, garage parking, pretty bay windows. Even the initial peep-view from the front door made me happy.

More photos here, Ree.

AND the owner allows you to have a cat :D Now I have to try to see if J can live with a cat (potential allergies) and maybe in the next months or year we can have one with us.
